How to check your RAM compatibility


Every one needs speed and performance in the laptop or PC but we are not aware about what Ram to buy for the laptop or PC . You need to follow the following steps to identify the correct technology and capacity .

Firstly : Check the laptop model number. Google down in the search bar as : dell 3542 ram upgrade ” , there you will be able to find some link which will tell you the capacity and technology supported . Check the dell website first and reconfirm with other websites so that you are well confirmed about both the things.

Secondly : You can also verify the details by service tag number . You can use this service tag number to use it on the Brand official website and check the upgradation section.

Thirdly : For lenovo laptop you need to check the “model data sheet” through google..

Fourth : For Asus you need to check the official website of India .

Fifth : If you wish to know about the details of the laptop, download any freeware software like cpu z, install and run. You may know the exact model or part number of RAM already installed in your laptop. Search for the same part number as it will match the technology and cas latency which are main things to match for the upgradation.

Why the frequency of my laptop reduces ?


It has been found in recent discussions with some buyers that they are facing the problem of reduction of frequency from 3200Mhz to 2666Mhz or from 2933Mhz to 2666Mhz , even when the laptop maximum support is 2933Mhz or 3200Mhz .

Here is the explanation to the above query.

Case -1

First of all one should understand that same frequency may have different Cas latency. For example : A 3200Mhz memory may have Cas latency 20 or 21 or 22. Higher the Cas latency lower is the performance. This Cas latency makes the difference in prices , apart from capacity. One should choose the low Cas latency memory module in ‘pair’ for better performance

Now when the preinstalled memory has a Cas latency of 22 and we are upgrading with memory module having Cas latency 20 , we will not get the working Cas latency in laptop as 20 but it will be fluctuating from 22-21-20, But if you buy a memory module having Cas latency as 17 to pair with 20 , than it will work at 19 and not at 17 .

The Cas latency 19 refers to DDR4 2666Mhz

Case -2

If the preinstalled memory is 8GB DDR4 2933Mhz having Cas latency of 20 and you upgrade with a memory of 16Gb DDR4 2933 having Cas latency 17 , still the laptop speed will downgrade to Cas latency 19 , i.e. 2666Mhz . Even the capacity factor will not help in upgrading the speed as the capaxity is just just a virtual storage with the memory and it does not impact the speed until the response rate is low(Cas latency)


When ever you upgrade your PC or a Laptop always try that you pair with similar Cas latency (Brands can vary) . You will get a perfect and better performance in same Cas latency (say 22-22 ,17-17,21-21, 20-20) even if the CL is high but in pair then in unequal Cas latency(22-17 or 22-20 ) memory module.

What is CAS Latency ?

A standard, predetermined number of clock cycles for data read/writes to or from the memory modules and the memory controller. Once the data read/write command and the row/column addresses are loaded, CAS Latency represents the wait time until the data is ready. The lower the CAS Latency , the better the perormance of that module

What is DDR4 ?

DDR (Double Data Rate) Synchronous Dynamic Random Access Memory (SDRAM) It is fourth-generation memory technology, more commonly referred to as “DDR4 or PC4 .” DDR4 memory modules are not backward compatible with any previous generations of DDR SDRAM due to lower voltage (1.2V),Like the DDR4 will not be compatible to the DDR3 technology due to different pin configurations and incompatible memory chip technology.

What is DIMM Type , how to know it ?

UDIMM (non-ECC Unbuffered Dual In-Line Memory Module) is a long form-factor memory module with a data width of x64, most commonly used in desktop systems where error correction is not required and DIMM capacity is restricted. It refers to the desktop Memory Module

SODIMM (Small Outline Dual In-Line Memory Module) is a reduced form-factor memory module intended for smaller compute systems, such as laptops, micro servers, printers or routers. Refers to the laptop Memory Module.


A part number that includes multiple memory modules, typically in support of dual, triple, or quad channel memory architecture. For example, K2 = 2 DIMMs in the package to equal the total capacity. Like HX429S17IB2K2/16 refers to the kit of 2

How to check the Speed or Frequency

The data rate or effective clock speed that a memory module supports, measured in MHz (MegaHertz) or MT/s (Megatransfers per second). The higher the speed, the more data can be transferred per second. Like a 3200Mhz means that the data transfer rate is at a speed of 3200MT/second.

What is Latency Timing

The information below will help illustrate the various settings that can be adjusted when setting the memory timings in the motherboard BIOS for optimum performance. Please note that these settings may vary depending on motherboard make/model or BIOS firmware version.

CAS Latency (CL): Delay between activation of a row and the reading of that row.

RAS to CAS or RAS to Column Delay (tRCD): Activates the row

Row Precharge Delay or RAS Precharge Delay (tRP/tRCP): Deactivates the row

Row Active Delay or RAS Active Delay or time to ready): Number of clock cycles between activation/deactivation of row.
